The Volvo XC90 is a medium sized lavish SUV that was developed by Volvo, and the company revealed this model at the Detroit Motor Show, in the year 2002.
It was developed on the design platform of P2, which was the top selling car at that time.
The engineers are trying to improve its fuel economy by usage of hybrid technology and start-stop technology.
First Generation (2003—2009)
The first generation Volvo XC90 was introduced in 2003 and it was launched in two trims; the T6 and the 2.5T.
The T6 provided a 2.9L 24 valve twin turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine that could deliver 236 ft-lbs (320 N-m) of torque and 272 hp (203 kW; 276 PS) of power.
Coming to the 2.5T, it was a basic version and was provided a 2.5L 20 valve turbocharged inline 5-cylinder engine that could produce only 236 ft-lbs (320 N-m) of torque and 210 hp (160 kW; 210 PS) of power. The T6 was mated with a GM-sourced Volvo modified GT and 4T65EV4 speed automatic transmission, whereas the 2.5T was mated with an Aisin co-developed AW51 5 and 55-50 speed transmission.
Changes in 2005 Volvo XC90
In 2005, the Volvo XC90 was included with a new Yamaha-Ford V8 engine. The new 4.4 L Volvo B8444S V8 engine could produce 292 hp (218 kW; 296 PS) of power. For the first time, the model was improved to produce
• 325 ft-lbs (441 N-m) of torque and
• 311 hp (232 kW; 315 PS) of power.
For 2007, the model was updated with redesigned interior and the front as well as rear parts of the vehicle were also altered. In that year, a 3.2 L SI6 straight-6 engine substituted the B524T2 straight-5-cylinder engine and developed 235 hp (175 kW; 238 PS) of power. The 2007 model was released at the New York Auto Show. The new XC90 is developed at Torslanda Plant of Volvo in Sweden.
Safety
The roof of XC90 was protected with a sturdy steel to assist a fail in the accommodate cavity, in case of a collision. This Volvo system is known as ROPS and was closely related with the SIPS, DSTC, Roll Stability Control (RSC) systems.
Second Generation (Ambiguous)
The Second generation version of Volvo XC90 is supposed to be designed for 2010 model year. But, due to unforeseen reasons, its launch has been postponed. Volvo has however announced that the development of 2nd generation XC90 has not been stopped altogether. And, the manufacturers are planning to delay the launch of second generation until 2012.
It is expected that the second generation will come with
• improved handling,
• lighter weight, and
• very high fuel economy.
2012 Volvo XC90

The 2012 model is also expected to contain larger third row seat. Most of the customers and reviewers are expecting that it will have an elective panoramic sunroof too.
